The Nightingale of South Bank

by Little Pixie Productions

theatre, music-and-opera

One woman Opera show with a interesting story and drama. Featuring a professional Opera Singer & pianist

about the production

The drama is about an Opera Singer Florence Easton who was born in 1882 South Bank, Middlesbrough. After training at the Royal Academy at the turn of the 20th century, she went on to become one of our most versatile English opera singers and became known professionally as “The Nightingale of South Bank”. Florence settled in America after the start of World War 1. In 1918 At the Metropolitan New York she created the role of Lauretta in the world premiere of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, making her the first soprano ever to sing the famous aria “O Mio Babbino Caro”.

Show is for Adults & Children over 10. The story is of a female role model in a genre that is seldom staged in an accessible form to a family audience. It will have particular resonance to families, young girls & women with a strong emphasis on ‘following your dream’ & self-belief. In addition to entertaining audiences, we aim to instil in young people a love of live performance, in particular, song & drama; creating future audiences/performers. It is of particular importance to us that we take our show to audiences that aren't usually able to easily access operatic performances.

An interesting idea... The role of Florence is played by Helena Leonard who has a powerful soprano voice. That she gave such a successful performance suggests that she must have put in a great deal of rehearsal. Could this be the way for more opera to be brought to the Fringe in the future?

Peter Lowe - Review at Buxton Fringe Featival

"Why is Helena at the fringe? She should be on the main stage!"

Buxton Fringe Festival

"Amazing, what a wonderful experience. A professional powerful performance. For those who attended it was a 5 star performance and a missed opportunity for others."
