The Reckoning

by The Art of Change

music-and-opera, theatre

With the Suffrage centenary, The Reckoning, celebrates & explores stories leading to this event alongside its implications in modern society

about the production

100years ago women finally got the vote. But at what cost? Labour MP, Sara, puts finishing touches in place for the final reading of her Private Member's Bill. Tory Minister, Imogen, is on the campaign trail with her assistant. A century earlier, suffragette Emily takes her cause to Parliament. Had she'd known Elizabeth did the same 300 years previously, she wouldn’t have been so patient. Four women. Four stories. The impact of their actions felt for generations. The Reckoning, a new piece of theatre, interweaves classic and new songs, with fictional and factual stories of women who strive for equality.

We aim to work collaboratively across artistic mediums, this year choosing to work with a playwright and composers to create of our first production, The Reckoning. Written for the general population to sing, art songs explore normal human experiences and relationships: an evening’s entertainment in your own home. What makes them so special is their intimacy and immediacy.
