Irregular Arts - An Odd Encounter

by Little Mighty

theatre, cabaret

A riotous mash-up of cabaret, theatre show and wedding reception.

about the production

A riotous mash-up of cabaret, theatre show and wedding reception, Odd Encounter asks if the whole idea of finding “The One” was always a bit misguided. There’s blurred lines and mysteriously shaped vegetables. There’s Princess Leia and a visitation from Nigella Lawson. There’s trains, tunnels and pure filth. A new show for the age of Harvey Weinstein and #metoo, this unique performance event lifts the lid on love & sex, beginnings & endings, and the passage of time. Plus you get cake and bubbly.

about the artist

Testament, has spent over a decade in the music business as a rapper and Guinness World Record holding beatboxer. His album, released by First Word Records, includes collaborations with Grammy Award winner Corinne Bailey Rae and Mercury Prize nominee Soweto Kinch. His theatre experience began by working with beatboxer Shlomo on his shows Boxed, and The Lip Factory. He then created his own show, Blake Remixed, which visited the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and toured the UK to acclaim. His play Black Men Walking for Eclipse Theatre and Revolution Mix is touring throughout the spring, including a run at London’s Royal Court.

LX Design will be made available in advance of the tour.

We require the supply of a PA suitable to venue.

The show travels with its own projector. Ideally the venue will provide its own screen, though this can be sourced if required.

Odd Encounter offers a rollicking good night out that will appeal to seasoned cultural attenders and people who rarely engage with the arts, including:

• Fans of contemporary performance and live art, and adventurous theatre audiences who might want to try something a little bit different.

• Fans of cabaret performance.

• LGBTQI audiences. We particularly recommend (and might be able to support) making connections with local networks, who might engage in additional wraparound activities.

• University students currently involved in performance or gender studies.

“I’m a big fan of cake, cabarets and feminism, and ‘An Odd Occasion’ (which it most certainly was) was a perfect combination of all three.”

Anatomical Cupcake Decoration Workshop

We’ve found that our anatomically-shaped cupcakes are a great conversation starter! We’ve worked with women of all ages to create their own delicious fanny cupcakes, and found it a brilliant way to get people involved.

Queen for a Day Workshop

Odd Encounter sees performer Jenny Wilson dress up in “drag” to create an extreme, exaggerated version of “femininity”. This workshop invites women to explore their own identities and see themselves in a new light. Through dressing up, characterisation, conversation and performance, Queen for a Day is a celebration of women and all that they can be.
