The Selfish Giant

by Wrongsemble

theatre, children-and-family

Oscar Wilde's classic tale imagined for the stage in a magical adventure for ages 3-7 and their grown-ups Co-commissioned by Barnsley Civic

about the production

In a cold grey town, not too far from here, hidden behind a crumbling wall and a thousand signs which say ‘KEEP OUT’ lives... The Selfish Giant. So selfish he shut away the garden where the children used to play and cursed the town to neverending winter. Or so the story goes… But one curious child wants to find out the truth about what really lies within. This brand new adaptation is a midscale production bursting with colour, puppetry, light and an original soundtrack. Co-commissioned by Barnsley Civic and Stockton ARC.

Thoroughly enjoyed The Selfish Giant by Wrongsemble! Amazed how well behaved & attentive the youngsters were, and my 11 year old compadre was entranced too!

Jane, Audience Member/Parent

Big thumbs up from me! Clever reminder that we need to listen to both sides of a tale before we make a judgement, despite what our media tell us!

John Tomlinson, York Theatre Royal/Audience Member/Father

As a retired Primary school Headteacher I first read 'The Selfish Giant' to a class of children back in 1969 and have made a point of reading every year since (it is my all time favourite story) so I was intrigued as to how Wrongsemble would interpret it. I shouldn't have worried...It is a wonderful, contemporary reworking of the classic and I would urge anyone, adult or child, to go and see it. It is performed by two amazingly talented actors who kept me, my 3 year old grandchild and all other children in the audience totally enthralled!

Alan Warmby, Audience Member/Grandparent/Theatre Lover
