music-and-opera
A crunchy, bite-sized opera for all the family. A fairy-tale, told by insects. Features exotic costumes and masks.
about the production
The Butterfly’s Spell is a chamber opera based on an early experimental play by Federico Garcia Lorca. It tells how a handsome Poet Beetle rejects the love of the village beauty in favour of an impossible infatuation with a fragile Butterfly whose destiny it is to fly away. A cautionary tale with identity issues at its heart, but a light opera which also features a drunken Scorpion, an overbearing Mother and Two Fireflies who glow in the dark. Together with a philosophising Doctor Cockroach, these characters also narrate and comment on the story.

"Bite sized opera strikes gold - An impressive debut with all the ingredients of a full length opera, arias, love scene, ensembles and a final tragedy all played out in just 55 minutes. This rich mix of interlocking characters quietly bring their theatrical performances to an intense climax of pain and despair. There is much to commend this lively production…” (Six Characters in Search of a Stage, 2014)
“Having never been to an opera before… this was completely different to how I expected - even down to the singing style… I enjoyed it a lot because of this. The way I look at opera has definitely been altered. I would approach other pieces with an open mind and a view that opera is in fact a flourishing and contemporary art form.” (Opera With A Title, Tete a Tete Festival, 2015)
