The Devil Speaks True

by Goat and Monkey

site-specific-and-immersive, theatre

A chilling exploration into the psychological effects of war, combining Macbeth, verbatim text from veterans and binaural sound design.

about the production

The Devil Speaks True is about the journey home of people from conflict zones. This engulfing production cuts the real words of ex-servicemen with Shakespeare's Macbeth to explore the Post Traumatic Stress disorder of Macbeth's brother-in-arms Banquo and of veterans in the modern world. Often taking place in complete darkness, The Devil Speaks True uses wireless headphones, binaural sound design, projection and dance to plunge audiences into a chilling exploration of the psychological effects of war.

about the artist

Goat and Monkey has been making work in various genres since 2004. We create highly visual, detailed and ambitious work and like to make things that are epic, surprising an interesting. Previous projects include online stories, real-world treasure hunts, large-scale site-specific performances, promenade performances, studio productions and alternate reality games. We regularly work with other organisations including universities, museums, theatres and the National Trust.

The company tours with its own sound and lighting systems only requiring a single 13A socket USR. We will need to be able to link into the in-house DMX on a 5-pin connector for 2 cues (start and end).
Playback is via Qlab on a show laptop. We would like to tie in to the in-house PA, specifically subs if available.

Ultimately, it is an entirely engulfing experience, emotionally intense and technologically advanced without gimmickry....Dominic Kennedy's sound design and audio work is so transportive that it feels like you are an audience of one.
