Contemporary re-imagining of E.T.A Hoffmann's gothic classic 'The Sandman' for a solo performer

about the production

Sandman is a contemporary reimagining of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 19th century gothic story 'The Sandman' for a solo performer, fusing storytelling, physical theatre and puppetry to immerse its audience in an intense and thrilling nightmare world. Sandman tells the story of Nathaniel, a student, whose childhood trauma, embodied by the creepy figure of the Sandman, continues to haunt him in his adult life. In this performance a mysterious woman (performed by Adie Mueller) transforms into the story's characters, each offering different views on Nathaniel's experience. Part gothic horror, part science-fiction Sandman is a visceral and original piece of contemporary storytelling.

about the artist

Adie Mueller is an actress and theatre maker. Her work explores the relationship between physicality and text and between the audience and the performer. Adie worked as actor, director and deviser on a number of physical and site-specific productions, notably Teatro Potlach (Italy), Frank Theatre (Australia) and Company333. A playwright and director, Mike Carter seeks innovative uses of form and genre to represent experience in the contemporary world. Central themes in his work are social politics. His most recent writing has been staged at festivals and London fringe venues including the Old Red Lion and Theatre 503
