Diary of an Expat

by Paper Smokers

comedy, theatre

A semi autobiographic strong and stable comedy about an immigrant’s journey towards full Britishness.

about the production

DIARY OF AN EXPAT is a semi autobiographic political comedy about an immigrant’s journey towards full Britishness while a funny little thing called Brexit threatens the European dream of life abroad. It tells the comic story of the encounter between modern migrant Cecilia and London - a contemporary El Dorado craved by generations of young Europeans. Confronting the legal technicalities of becoming a citizen of another country, Cecilia questions what role this will play on her identity and how we decide where we belong.

about the artist

Paper Smokers is a collective of storytellers. Our work includes theatre, music, installations, visual arts and film. We strongly believe in the value of international collaboration and the coming together of artists from different backgrounds as precious tools to interpret today’s world. Regarding our style, the intersection of languages is a frontier we keep on exploring. We’re great fans of irony and humour in stories. Our new project “Miles Apart Together” has been selected by Third Angel for their 2018 Mentoring Scheme.

immigrants and expat communities, young people, women, anyone interested in Europe, politics, comedy, life in the UK.

Gragnani is a very engaging performer. Diary of an Expat is a satirical exploration of life in Britain from the point of an outsider, who desperately wants, and is succeeding in becoming a naturalised British citizen.  This is one of those rare productions that makes you think long and hard about a subject, without even realising it’s had that affect on you.

Theatre Weekly

Gragnani has a very clear delivery, and good rapport with the audience. A heartfelt and poignant production.

London Theatre 1

Expressive and genuinely hilarious. Gragnani keeps the energy and comedy flowing in clockwork pace, building a strong and stable satire that feels relevant and resonant in the current political climate.

Broadway World

We offer relaxed performances and would want the venues to be as accessible as possible.

We offer workshops for young people interested in creating autobiographical work; quizzes on "how British you are"; Q&A with the creatives of the show around the themes and stories of the show.
