The Forecast

by Limbik

theatre

What does freedom mean to four women hanging by a thread (literally).

about the production

In a backyard near you, a four women from four corners of the globe float in mid-air. They have a new job: Human garden ornament. Inspired by a short story from 2017 Booker Prize winner George Saunders, Limbik’s latest show weaves stories, songs, secrets and shadows into a bold, bonkers prediction for the days ahead.

about the artist

Limbic System, noun, an interconnected system of nerves and networks in the brain that interprets feelings in the body. Limbik creates new theatre work that explores human stories from epic environments. We create through collaboration, improvisation, movement, music, atmosphere and imagery. We like to go on research trips: we seek out Ghost Towns in California, fishing communities in Northern Island and Specialist nurses in hidden corners of the NHS. We question, we investigate, we debate, we distill, we share. We also make nice meals.

stage dimensions

width: 8 metres

height: 4 metres

depth: 6 metres

Because of the giant dresses on wheels, the show requires a minimum playing space of 8m x 6m.

The dresses use LED strip lighting running wireless DMX to the lighting desk.

The show will use a cyclorama when available.

For 2018, we are planning on working with projection mapping to enhance the shadow puppetry sequences.

“All kinds of brilliant... Four phenomenal performances are at the heart of this impressive piece. Flitting from comedy to devastation in a matter of moments, the piece is a breathtaking and immersive experience. The staging, comprised of four giant white dresses mounted on wheeled platforms that the actors can slip in and out of, makes for quite the spectacle. Delicate choreography makes even the simplest of movements resemble dance sequences. A gripping, thought-provoking script, beautifully directed and brilliantly acted. The Forecast is not to be missed."

"The Forecast is an unforgettable experience on so many levels. The concept is brilliant – a horrifying, yet ultimately hopeful story about a future that is already pulling into the driveway. Becoming paid hanging garden ornaments – who collectively respond to the instructions of their operators, much like Siri or Alexa – is the only safety net available to the four women characters. As they experience their intertwined existence, and observe that of the family they serve, they throw us face to face with the brutality, desperation, prejudice, grief, exploitation, consumerism, loneliness, escapism and the sheer challenge of living together."

"It's a genius concept: extreme enough to prove a point, but close enough to the gizmos we already have in our homes to seem disturbingly real... Along the way, there's plenty of humour, a little bit of shadow-puppetry, and some delightful harmony singing. There are some powerful moments too: each of the women has a turn in the spotlight, explaining the very different forces that have brought them here. And there is, I think, a quiet but insistent clarion call – a reminder to do things for each other, not just for those who pay."

For hearing impaired, the show is very visual but text heavy. We would be happy add work with a sign language interpreter.

We are always happy to hold a post-show discussion with the audience and the creative team.

Additionally, we can offer workshops around the theatrical techniques used in the show, ideally in the run up to the performance, so that participants can then see the application of the techniques in the show. With The Forecast, workshop themes could include, "Devising Theatre," "Creating Characters," and "Shadow Puppetry," and can range from 2-6 hours. These would incur an additional cost of £75-150, depending on the length of the workshop.
