What does it mean to be a man or a woman?
about the production
Kit is in an amusing and unique position, having transitioned from female to male in his early thirties, he has experienced adult life on both sides of the gender fence. When he enters a male gym changing room for the first time he's confronted by masculinity in all its forms - the good, the bad and the ugly. Refreshingly honest and irreverent physical theatre comedy by critically acclaimed Rhum and Clay and darkly comic theatre writer and director Kit Redstone, exploring the epic path that we all have to take when forging an identity. "Multi-layered and gripping." - Lyn Gardner
about the artist
Rhum and Clay Theatre Company is an ensemble that shares stories in mischievous and surprising ways: original shows that are inventive, ramshackle and cinematic. They formed the company at l’Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, where they learnt their craft. They would also spend long hours into the night drinking rhum and making masks out of clay. It was these happy memories that inspired the name under which the company perform. Alongside creating theatre productions, they collaborate with young people and the next generation of theatre makers through their popular workshop programme Rhum and Clay are an associate ensemble of New Diorama Theatre

"[T]his multi-layered and gripping physical theatre piece is much more than what Redstone wickedly satirises as another story about “brave little trans soldiers”
"a daring, funny, brilliant play"
"a striking piece of theatre that is as entertaining as it is insightful"
We would like to encourage relaxed, captioned and signed performances. Touch tours, audio flyers, and story boards are available upon request and the performers are happy to meet with audience members before a show.
Q&A is embedded into the show. The performance is 60 minutes long, with 30 minutes then available for an interval and Q&A to extend the conversation around gender identity and point audiences to support groups and charities who could further support. As part of the tour we look to support venues with re-evaluating training and policies around supporting trans audiences with accessing the building and seek to connect with local young people. With support we can do this by running physical theatre workshops, with a view to drawing audiences from local students.
