The Chef Show

by Ragged Edge Productions

theatre, comedy

A fusion of comedy play and cookery.

about the production

Two actors play all the characters in the story of a busy night in the local curry house, inspired by interviews with real people in the trade. The actors are joined by a guest chef from a restaurant or takeaway local to your venue, cooking live. The Chef Show reflects on the many villages and market towns where there are ‘Indian’ restaurants with staff who rarely have any social contact with other members of the community. The performance includes a chance to taste the food and share conversation with the chef and the cast. Deliciously entertaining for all the family.

about the artist

Ragged Edge is a new theatre company based in the North, making innovative contemporary work for audiences that have limited access to the Arts. The Chef Show has had a very successful first tour (to rural touring venues and studio theatres) in Jan-Feb 2017, playing to over 1400 people over 23 dates with many sell-outs and at 70% capacity across the tour. The Chef Show has also been a case study in a Creative Case project in Yorkshire and quoted as a model of good practice in diversity work. We require assistance in recruiting local partner restaurant businesses - and can support promoter/booker with this.
We use two portable camping stoves (naked flame) for the cookery on stage and need smoke alarms isolating for performances.

Rural touring audiences. South Asian audiences. Family audiences.

“This is a chef’s special, a deliciously funny and occasionally dramatically-daring concoction of a play.”

British Theatre Guide

“The comedy in Stefan Escreet’s slick production compliments not-so-funny cultural issues, especially the immigrant experience of prejudice and the still-powerful pull of family ties in Bangladesh.”

The Stage

“A stroke of genius. While it makes serious and urgent points that speak to the divisive times in which we are currently living, the play is also very funny. Humour, food and empathy – a potent and winning combination.”

The Yorkshire Post

Could be suitable for BSL interpretation or captioning - we do not provide this.

We are looking for £650 fee for rural touring scheme bookings and an £800 guarantee from other venues. We do not charge VAT.
Always willing to discuss this in relation to house capacity etc.
