A new music theatre piece for family audiences combining folk-inspired music, engrossing storytelling and bewitching puppetry
about the production
The Rattler is a new interactive reimagining of the traditional Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale, created for a 21st-century audience, aimed at young people aged 7+ and their families. Each performance begins with craft activities and song-learning, followed by a magnificent, colourful and noisy pageant, to which the audience are invited to join in and sing along. As the festivities unfold, the audience are invited to help bring this age-old tale to life. The text is a witty take from BAFTA Award-nominated writer Martin Riley and narrative is driven forward by catchy, delicate, moody, fun, folk-inspired music from composer Stephen Deazley.
about the artist
Mahogany Opera Group is a leading UK opera and music theatre company specialising in contemporary and new work. Making opera for and with young people sits right at the heart of what Mahogany does – to stretch the boundaries of what opera can be and who it is for. The ‘who it is for’ is crucial. We believe it is vital to build a body of work for young people to engage with and build the currently small repertoire of work for this age group.
